into a profession of academically trained individuals. The same academics could just as easily perform a caesarean section as open-heart surgery.

They did not enjoy much status to start with

In the early 20th century, as a result of increased consumption and export of meat and dairy, the livestock industry was continuing to develop.  This dramatically increased the demand for animal healthcare.

The position of veterinarians and veterinary medicine

By the end of the 21st century, the position of veterinarians and veterinary medicine in modern society was no longer up for discussion. This is closely linked to the changed role and position of animals in modern society and the consequent demand for veterinary services
