The birth of the UMC
More and more specialisations

Throughout the 20th century, more and more specialisations saw the light of day, and each came with its own clinic and equipment. Combined with technological advances and the growing costs of healthcare, the need for a complex of buildings that would keep pace with this expansion grew.
After a whole series of propositions and moves, the UMC came into being in 2000

Thanks to the merger of several hospitals, including the WKZ, with the Utrecht University's Faculty of Medicine, this uniquely Dutch UMC-formula saw the light of day.
More overlap between healthcare, teaching and research also caused more friction...

But fortunately, medics and managers do not live in separate worlds.
