Urban castle Oudaen

Oudegracht 99

Contributed by

Beer from Utrecht — Around the year 1280, the wealthy Zoudenbalch family had a stone castle built on the Oudegracht. Just over a century later, the urban castle came into the hands of the Van Houdaen family. This is how the castle got its name. Until 1965, Oudaen served as a home for the elderly. After being owned by a student union for some time, Oudaen was opened as a catering facility in 1986, after a restoration. The basement houses a beer brewery.
