Students and the city — Right now, you are on the Janskerkhof with its tell-tale signs of student life. Utrecht is a student city. Ever since the university was founded, student life and the city have been inextricably linked.
The large yellow, fortress-like building in front of you is called PHRM (Placet hic Requiescere Musis: it pleases the muses to rest here) and is affectionately known as the yellow sandcastle. It is home to the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps. As you cross the bridge to the Drift, at number 19 you will see Hestia, the sorority of the all-female Utrechtsche Vrouwelijke Studentenvereeniging(UVSV)/Nieuwe Vereniging van Vrouwelijke Studenten. These are the only two single-sex student unions in the Netherlands. But then again, Utrecht counts many student unions.
