Interior of the former Paardenkathedraal (Building A 22) of the veterinary faculty of the University (Biltstraat 172) in Utrecht.

Paardenkathedraal

Veeartsenijstraat 155

Former riding school of the Utrechtse Rijks Veeartsenijschool (Utrecht State Veterinary School) — This former riding school was at the heart of the care for sick horses, but also the place where students could ride on the clinic’s (test) horses. In the opposite building (along the Grift) the clinic for Internal Veterinary Medicine was located, and across the road is the former clinic for Surgery, the former ‘monsterbaan’ (monster course), where the lameness investigation took pace, and the former stables.

This building is part of Veeartsenijterrein (Veterinary Terrain) – the former complex of the Rijks Veeartsenijschool van Utrecht (State Veterinary School of Utrecht). This organisation was founded in 1821 and is the forerunner of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University.

In 1904, this riding school was built to treat and care for sick horses. The building stands out thanks to its neo-Gothic architecture combined with towers and battlements. In 1906, single horse stables were built opposite the riding school. You can recognise the single horse stables by the wooden Gothic trefoils on the gables.

The Paardenkathedraal has served as a theatre since 1993. Nowadays, the Utrecht-based Theater Utrecht company rehearses and gives performances here.
